Tarot & Oracle Cards: Similarities & Differences

Tarot & Oracle Cards : Similarities & Differences

Tarot and Oracle cards are both used for divination purposes. Tarot cards follow a standardized format of 78 cards including the 22 Major Arcana illustrating the Fool’s Journey and the 56 Minor Arcana showing aspects of life. There are four suits: Swords/Air/Mind, Pentacles/Coins/Earth/Security (usually of the physical realm), Wands/staves/Fire/Drive, and Cups/Water/Emotions.

Oracle Cards are any cards created for divination purposes that do not follow a standardized format such at Tarot, Lenormand, or Poker. Poker cards can be used for divination, but you don’t have to. These are CARDS, you can just treat them as pretty Cards if you want.

The two most commonly used formats for Tarot are the Rider-Waite or Crowley-Thoth. Beginners are often encouraged to start with one of those decks because of the vast amount of learning material available for those. Rider-Waite is the most popular. Even though I do not own either or those decks, some of the decks that I use do follow the “themes” behind either the Rider-Waite or Crowley-Thoth format.

Creating Your Own Deck

Most artists will pick a format and create accordingly. Tarot is a profound collective of symbolism and psychoanalytical processes that is wonderful to both study and work with. What is becoming more popular now, is the creation of Oracle decks. With Oracle decks, the Artist or Designer does not have to create all 78 cards; they can create as Many or as Few as they want! I kept talking about Marcella Kroll’s deck because I love the strong symbolism and also how she incorporates Runes with Alchemical Elements, Native American Symbols, Egyptian Symbols, and original symbols based off of topics that have deep meaning to her. In general, have fun browsing the many different Tarot, Oracle, Lenormand, and Poker decks that are out there! And enjoy creating your own when you are inspired to!

Gaining Permission to Publish Photos of Tarot & Oracle Decks online & in social media

(this post will be updated as i gain more information about publishers, and also as i gain more tarot decks :P)
This is my follow up to Biddy Tarot‘s VERY informative and eye opening post about Tarot reader’s guide to copyright. I decided to write this because I spent Quite a Long while searching online for ways to gain permission of use for the decks and I wanted to share what I know so that others don’t have to spend Forever online looking for the same information.

Sorted by Publisher:

(Independent) Artists You Know

ask them 😀 I have permission from Marcella Kroll and i LOVE her Sacred Symbols Oracle deck!

Blue Angel

I have permission from them to use images of Tarot & Oracle decks for non-commercial purposes as long as I credit where appropriate! I recommend you email their general info address.

Hay House

Hay house has not allowed me to publish images of their decks, I respect that. I will be altering my site to take down what images I have and will not be posting photos of their decks here. You can go look on their site and message customer service if you want to ask about different decks of yours. Btw I had to email customer service, the person on live chat gave me an email address because he/she did not have authority to decide about permission.

Lo Scarabeo

According to this post on Aeclectic Tarot‘s forum
If a person is in possession of a physical deck published by Lo Scarabeo, and intend to use the deck on the web inside a blog or an a review site, it is now possible to use the images. It’s the important that the blog or website is not linked to a commercial activity (for instance it’s not part of an online reading service). Also the “images copyrigth by Lo Scarabeo” is necessary. However, if the two aboive steps are maintained, it’s not necessary to have written permission from us. And there is no limits to the number of images that can be used.

It would be appreciated, but it’s not required, if any blog or website using our images would send us an e-mail to inform us. Also, warmly appreciated but not required, is a link to our website.

Lo Scarabeo hopes that this wide-angle permission will be of help to the Tarot community, without endorsing any pirate commercial use of Lo Scarabeo images.
This makes me REALLY happy because Most of my tarot decks are published by them. This is what I spent Quite a while searching online for. I even emailed Lo Scarabeo’s customer service, messaged them on facebook, and was wondering when they would reply.

Grounding with The Arrow Custom Card Layout/Spread

I am in a Tarot Jouraling group who’s theme this week is Grounding, which is important to all of us. As we go through our day, knowing what keeps us centered and grounded can help us deal with life’s frustrations. I actually like to tack on Grounding and Crownings cards to virtually All my readings because they Really help me out, especially when I am going through personal drama, burn out, or a breakdown caused by all those combined with the burden of all my freelance and personal projects that I am working on.

The Arrow

The Arrow - Grounding

  • 1 The Self : How I am am in this present moments
  • 2 & 3 How the situation I am in affects mes
  • 4, 5, & 6 What helps to ground mes
  • 7 What is at my Core. What drives me and keeps me going, and or the core project or issue that I am working on.
  • 8 What Crowns me in this situations

So after making this and calling it The Arrow instead of The Tree like I was considering, I realized that The Green Arrow is the name of a Marvel Super Hero and a Television series named after him. I find this coincidence very interesting because he is an Archer, a person who uses a bow and arrows! The symbol for Focus in the Sacred Symbols Oracle Deck by Marcella Kroll is a bow and arrow! oo synchronicity!

Focus!

Grounding helps me focus. Focusing help me Ground. A unique statement who’s converse has the same Truth Value, hence if you negate it, it will also be False->False both ways.

Here is the reading I did for myself:
The Arrow : my spread

I am working with Spirit to manifest my goals. The current situation brings domestic instability, hence I become more nurturing by connecting to the Earth energy and solidifying my confidence so that I can support others. What grounds me is my analytical capabilities combined with my focus on goals while not distracting myself with idle chatter. At my core I am working towards balancing all the different aspects of my life, and what crowns or highlights my experience is the love and harmony that I share with the Universe, which encompasses me and all of everything.

While we rush about our day, trying to maintain the balance or time, the flow of money in and out of our lives, and the nurturing of ourselves as well as others; keeping a space for love in our hearts: where we can love ourselves and know that the Universe loves us, makes the whole world magical. Here, in this is a crazy magical wonderland, we stand with our soul and apply wit and focus to the vibration of our hearts as we pass through various mazes and portals.

Also! I am going to start hosting weekly Periscope talks starting Next week! Next week I will be on Periscope hosting a talk about Grounding on Monday 5/9 and Tuesday 5/10 at 12pm Pacific time. I am trying to decide which day is better for people, but I will be live on Periscope on Both days from 12-12:30pm Pacific time. Make sure to follow me @lunadeltarot!

The Challenger : Custom Tarot Card Layout / Spread

As I approach a major milestone this weekend, I decided to create this layout in celebration, and also to study the current and coming challenges.

The Challenger

Challenger tarot spread

  1. The Self
  2. The Situation : Where I am at
  3. The Background : How and why I am here
  4. Challenges I face
  5. Nature of the Challenges
  6. What Helps
  7. What Does Not Help
  8. Grounding/Centering Force
  9. Crowning/Uplifting Force

This weekend: I am giving Tarot and Oracle Car readings at The Holistic Faire and Marketpalce at The School of Multidimensional Healing Arts & Sciences! This is the first time that I am giving readings at a Metaphysical Faire! I gave two test readings last week at my interview and told that they would not know who they had room for until this week. And sure enough, early this week I received an email showing that I was on the roster for this week! I have been excited and looking forward to this all week! Prior to this, I have given readings to friends and strangers at smaller and mainly art based events and parties, and to a different type of audience. So this is a Exciting development for me!

After facing lots of difficulty in the past with the various fields that I have been trying to tap into, I have realized that not only is there is always something to challenge me and make me grow, but I should also challenge myself to help myself grow. Hence The Challenger custom Tarot Card Layout/Spread was created! It came from an idea I though of that would have a “weekend warrior” theme, since so many of us have weekends bustling with activity and randomness, in contrast to the consistent schedule of the weekdays. An online search reveals a definition of “weekend warrior” that I did not know of : military reservist who attends weekend meetings in order to fulfill military obligations. Which is interesting.

Anyways, here is the reading that I gave myself, using this spread:

the challenger reading

Right now I have finally found my way out of the woods and am no longer feeling helplessly lost. This is due to not giving up on something that I could have left. I was able to find my way after I decided to be more involved in something I did not understand and was previously not paying much attention to. The Challenge I face is worry, caused by false starts and the inability to launch new projects. What helps me is overcoming the mental trauma and negativity that comes from “failures” in my past. What does not help is trying to do everything on my own, without asking for help or advice of any kind, and in general not being informed of mistakes that I am making. What Grounds me is the knowing that the World and all that it has to offer will Always be there for me. What crowns me is taking a break from constant studying of the external world to turn inward in order to learn more about my inner self and the truth that lies within me.

When you don’t understand something, study it closely and you will come to a breakthrough.
Sometimes, the study will take you to places you never knew existed, outside and inside of the self.

No matter what happens, know that the World is always there for you, and you can always take a break to look within and reflect on what you have learned.
