What to store cards in?

I also uploaded a video for the 31 Days of Tarot Challenge to where the topic was about what was the favorite bag or box for me to store my Tarot & Oracle cards in. I don’t have a “favorite”, I just like to use fabric bags, and even made some of my own!

Notes:

  • Some say plastic or “synthetic” material containers are bad but don’t listen to them, use whatever works for you.
  • Boxes and plastic bags started breaking on me, which is why I switched to fabric bags.
  • Making bags is simple, and fun 🙂

The big one was what my parents got from a hotel and had accessories in it like toothbrush, toothpaste and a comb, the fish and the black multicolored ones are from Daiso which is a Japanese $1.50 store that I love to browse, I even got the white string and beautiful and colorful #chirimen fabric there! I like to use the chirimen fabric to make small bags for my Tarot cards because the Daiso bags are best for miniature cards. You can see the black bag doesn’t close over the standard sized tarot cards I put in there. I was also planning to make more bags but I want them to be multicolored/patterned and I am waiting till I have a good variety color and pattern matching pieces before I make anything. I am most likely going to just use the generic fabric store fabric which I have a ton of already to make more Tarot and Oracle Card bags.

Tarot and Oracle Card Decks that Luna uses

For the 31 days of Tarot topic of the day I filmed a little video talking about the various Tarot and Oracle Card Decks I use for personal use. And it’s quite a lot, I’m actually surprised at the amount.

Note: No cards are shown, it’s just me chatting away because I mention several decks that I did not get permission to post public images of.

Benebell Wen also has PDF print outs that you can refer to when you have a question about usage of elements within the public domain. I can’t find her specific page right now but you can go look for it if you want to.

Btw I plan on illustrating my own deck one day … one day

Tarot & Oracle Cards: Similarities & Differences

Tarot & Oracle Cards : Similarities & Differences

Tarot and Oracle cards are both used for divination purposes. Tarot cards follow a standardized format of 78 cards including the 22 Major Arcana illustrating the Fool’s Journey and the 56 Minor Arcana showing aspects of life. There are four suits: Swords/Air/Mind, Pentacles/Coins/Earth/Security (usually of the physical realm), Wands/staves/Fire/Drive, and Cups/Water/Emotions.

Oracle Cards are any cards created for divination purposes that do not follow a standardized format such at Tarot, Lenormand, or Poker. Poker cards can be used for divination, but you don’t have to. These are CARDS, you can just treat them as pretty Cards if you want.

The two most commonly used formats for Tarot are the Rider-Waite or Crowley-Thoth. Beginners are often encouraged to start with one of those decks because of the vast amount of learning material available for those. Rider-Waite is the most popular. Even though I do not own either or those decks, some of the decks that I use do follow the “themes” behind either the Rider-Waite or Crowley-Thoth format.

You want to get permission before you get into legal trouble.

Creating Your Own Deck

Most artists will pick a format and create accordingly. Tarot is a profound collective of symbolism and psychoanalytical processes that is wonderful to both study and work with. What is becoming more popular now, is the creation of Oracle decks. With Oracle decks, the Artist or Designer does not have to create all 78 cards; they can create as Many or as Few as they want! I kept talking about Marcella Kroll’s deck because I love the strong symbolism and also how she incorporates Runes with Alchemical Elements, Native American Symbols, Egyptian Symbols, and original symbols based off of topics that have deep meaning to her. In general, have fun browsing the many different Tarot, Oracle, Lenormand, and Poker decks that are out there! And enjoy creating your own when you are inspired to!

Gaining Permission to Publish Photos of Tarot & Oracle Decks online & in social media

(this post will be updated as i gain more information about publishers, and also as i gain more tarot decks :P)
This is my follow up to Biddy Tarot‘s VERY informative and eye opening post about Tarot reader’s guide to copyright. I decided to write this because I spent Quite a Long while searching online for ways to gain permission of use for the decks and I wanted to share what I know so that others don’t have to spend Forever online looking for the same information.

Sorted by Publisher:

(Independent) Artists You Know

ask them 😀 I have permission from Marcella Kroll and i LOVE her Sacred Symbols Oracle deck!

Blue Angel

I have permission from them to use images of Tarot & Oracle decks for non-commercial purposes as long as I credit where appropriate! I recommend you email their general info address.

Hay House

Hay house has not allowed me to publish images of their decks, I respect that. I will be altering my site to take down what images I have and will not be posting photos of their decks here. You can go look on their site and message customer service if you want to ask about different decks of yours. Btw I had to email customer service, the person on live chat gave me an email address because he/she did not have authority to decide about permission.

Lo Scarabeo

According to this post on Aeclectic Tarot‘s forum
If a person is in possession of a physical deck published by Lo Scarabeo, and intend to use the deck on the web inside a blog or an a review site, it is now possible to use the images. It’s the important that the blog or website is not linked to a commercial activity (for instance it’s not part of an online reading service). Also the “images copyrigth by Lo Scarabeo” is necessary. However, if the two aboive steps are maintained, it’s not necessary to have written permission from us. And there is no limits to the number of images that can be used.

It would be appreciated, but it’s not required, if any blog or website using our images would send us an e-mail to inform us. Also, warmly appreciated but not required, is a link to our website.

Lo Scarabeo hopes that this wide-angle permission will be of help to the Tarot community, without endorsing any pirate commercial use of Lo Scarabeo images.
This makes me REALLY happy because Most of my tarot decks are published by them. This is what I spent Quite a while searching online for. I even emailed Lo Scarabeo’s customer service, messaged them on facebook, and was wondering when they would reply.

US Games

You have to fill out a Permission Request and fax it to them. You can also read their Tarot Reproduction Policies
